SAN JOSE (KRON) — It wasn’t just an ordinary Monday for San Jose’s police chief.

Chief Larry Esquivel was driving into the police department’s parking lot off Mission Street around 8:45 a.m. when he saw a man wearing handcuffs running toward him.

The chief got out of his car and ordered the man, later identified as 26-year-old Hector Flores Arias of San Jose, to stop.

When Arias didn’t stop, the chief tried to tackle Arias but wasn’t able to do it. Arias kept running toward the parking lot gate and left police grounds.

Esquival chased Arias onto nearby streets, where he was able to tackle him and catch him.

Arias is suspected of murder had had been a fugitive since 2009.

The police department is conducting an investigation into the escape.
