SAN JOSE (BCN) — Sacred Heart Community Service in San Jose reached its goal today of providing 4,200 turkeys to supply their Thanksgiving food boxes for low-income families, organization spokeswoman Morgan Wordes said.
The nonprofit has been distributing the boxes at their office off of South First Street since Monday, according to Wordes.
The boxes also include canned food items, fresh produce and bread, she said.
The organization still needed more than 3,000 turkeys on Saturday, and 1,700 on Monday, Wordes said.HOW TO DONATE
Many people brought in donations to help meet the goal, including 1,000 turkeys from Presentation High School in San Jose and 200 from Safeway, according to Wordes. About 1,000 people went to Sacred Heart today to receive their box.
Others who didn’t register for the distribution were able to receive leftover donations from people who didn’t pick up their box or took out some items due to cultural practices that limit them from eating certain types of food, Wordes said.
There was a “good sense of community” between people receiving the donations and volunteers assisting them, she said.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties is still seeking turkey donations for its holiday food drive.
As of this afternoon, the Second Harvest still needs 3,000 turkeys to meet its holiday food drive goal of 19,000 by the end of the year, spokeswoman Caitlin Kerk said.
The food bank is also seeking nonperishable food items such as canned tuna, peanut butter and canned soup, Kerk said. Second Harvest partners with more than 300 agencies such as shelters, community centers and schools to provide food for the needy, she said.
