SAN JOSE (BCN) — A man who collapsed after leaving a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority bus and died at a hospital in San Jose over the weekend has been identified as 72-year-old Lawrence Thompson, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Thompson died after riding a bus from Tully and Senter roads to Snell Avenue and Blossom Hill Road late Saturday night into Sunday morning,

VTA spokeswoman Stacey Hendler Ross said.Thompson, a San Jose resident, died of a multiple blunt force crush injury in his trunk with liver lacerations, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The bus driver saw Thompson exit the bus and drove away, then saw the man collapse from the rearview mirror and stopped, according to Hendler Ross.

The driver called for help from the transit agency’s operations center and an ambulance crew responded to the scene, Hendler Ross said.

The man was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Hendler Ross.

VTA officials have reviewed video taken from security cameras on the bus and said it doesn’t appear the man’s injuries were associated with the bus, according to Hendler Ross.

San Jose police are investigating the incident.
