SAN JOSE (KRON)—The San Jose Police Department will hold a gun buyback event on Saturday.

The program is aimed at reducing the number of unwanted firearms and gun violence in San Jose.

It gives local residents an opportunity to voluntarily turn in their guns in exchange for gift cards.

For handguns, rifles and shotguns a $100 gift card will be given and a $200 gift card for assault weapons.

Guns will be checked for lost or stolen status, and if applicable will be returned to their legal owners.

All other firearms will be destroyed.

The program goes from 9 a.m. until 1:00 pm at the San Jose Police Department training substation on Great Oaks Parkway.
