SAN JOSE (KRON) — Library fines can clearly pile up.

San Jose’s library system said it has unpaid fines of around $6.8 million across its 23 branches.

They are now trying to figure out how to close the gap and are considering things like reduced fines and even amnesty.

San Jose’s fines are the highest in the Bay Area. The $6.8 million is reportedly five times higher than unpaid fines.

When Chicago’s Public Library system held an amnesty program in 2012 it retrieved 101,301 overdue items, valued at approximately $2 million. More than 40,000 patrons also got their library cards reinstituted.
