SAN JOSE (KRON) — The Bay Area’s largest city is considering unprecedented measures to deal with the drought. San Jose city leaders are considering removing some grass at the city’s parks.
At Jeffery Fontana Park in Almaden Valley, hearty rose bushes and drought-tolerant ground cover now covers the an area that used to be grass.
City leaders are now considering doing similar conversions at parks throughout the city.
A thousand square feet of grass between tennis courts and the street at Doerr Park uses 620 gallons of water each week.
San Jose officials say that while sustainable landscape is its goal, they want to strike a balance between reducing water use and respecting the need for parks that people want to use.
