SAN JOSE (KRON) — Law enforcement in the South Bay is ramping up efforts to get unwanted firearms off the streets.

Tuesday marks the first official National Gun Violence Awareness Day, Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith and County Supervisor wore orange.

Orange is the color worn by hunters. Tuesday, the duo and others across the country, wore it to symbolize the value of human life.

While taking part in the day of awareness, Sheriff Smith reminded people about a new gun buy-back program happening Saturday at Reid Hillview Airport, from 8 a.m. until noon.

Individuals will be able to exchange guns for cash, no questions asked.

In exchange for handguns, people will get $100 cash. They will get $200 for rifles and shotguns.
