Santa Clara County is being called on to save a county-owned building from the wrecking ball.
Advocates for the homeless believe the old City Hall Annex could become housing for the homeless.
When it comes to finding housing for the homeless, there is no such thing as a bad idea, which is why they are pushing an idea that would have the old San Jose City Hall Annex at North First and Mission to be converted to housing for the homeless.
Santa Clara County, which owns the property, provided a tour of the building on Monday. Mothballed years ago, the building is in bad shape and slated for demolition.
Local contractor James Salata claims to have financing available to convert the building into at least 100 units for the homeless.
But he underestimated what that would cost, says county COO Miguel Marquez.
The county had planned on converting the site into a parking lot as part of a long-term master plan to develop the entire area.
Meantime, a deadline looms for the county’s plan to demolish the building.
The board of supervisors is expected to vote on the homeless housing idea on Sept 11.
