An iconic San Francisco landmark is celebrating a big birthday on Monday.
Coit Tower has stood in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood for 85 years.
To celebrate the birthday, the Canessa Gallery in North Beach is showing a Coit Tower Artists-in-Action exhibit through October.
The tower was completed in 1933, and the observation deck offers tourists a 360-degree view of the City by the Bay.
The landmark was built at the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a patron of the city’s firefighters.
There is a strong push to make Coit Tower a National Landmark.
The tower recently has been named a “nationally significant” historic place on the National Register of Historic Places.
