San Francisco school board president skips Pledge of Allegiance

The San Francisco school board is at the center of a national controversy on Thursday night.

That’s after the new school board president Stevon Cook broke with tradition by skipping the Pledge of Allegiance.

He instead read from a poem.

“We start this meeting with a quote from Maya Angelou, who once said, ‘When you learn, teach. When you get, give.'”

KRON4 asked the school board president for a comment and he said in a statement, “I will say that I love the country. I honor the service of our men and women in uniform, and my primary focus as president of the board of education is ensuring our students and families have access to opportunity. “

Stevon Cook reportedly plans to continue replacing the Pledge of Allegiance with quotes promoting social justice.
