San Francisco Public Works member shot and killed

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A member of the San Francisco Department of Public Works was shot and killed in the city’s Mission District this morning, according to police.

The worker was in the area of 25th and Vermont streets, not far from San Francisco General Hospital, when he was shot around 8 a.m., police said.

He was then taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim has since been identified as 27-year-old Jermaine Jackson, Jr., according to department officials.

DPW Director Mohammed Nuru said Jackson, the father of two young children, was working with a crew removing graffiti at the time of the shooting, which he called a “tragic incident.”

A laborer apprentice with the department since March 2015, Jackson was expected to graduate from that program next year. He had previously participated in the city’s ‘Interrupt, Predict, Organize’ anti-violence program and had earned his GED while in it, Nuru said. Nuru described Jackson as a “motivated, hard-working and well-liked employee.”

“My prayers are with his loved ones and friends during this difficult and profoundly sad time,” Nuru said.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee spoke out as well in the following statement:

“This is a tragedy, and I am deeply saddened by the circumstances surrounding the death of one of our own, a dedicated employee of Public Works.This was a young man who worked very hard to build a good life for himself and his children, and was committed to his work keeping the City of San Francisco and our neighborhoods clean. This is a tragic instance of a life cut short.I spoke with his family this afternoon and extended condolences on behalf of the City and County of San Francisco. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family, friends and colleagues during this time of mourning and sorrow.”

In honor of Jermaine, Mayor Edwin M. Lee has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on City Hall from until sunset on Thursday December 1, 2016.

No one is in custody at this time, and the shooting remains under investigation, police Officer Giselle Talkoff said.
