SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — San Francisco police took in 91 guns in Saturday’s gun buyback program, a police spokeswoman said.

In all, 51 handguns, 23 rifles, 14 shotguns and 3 assault rifles were taken off the street, San Francisco police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan said. Collecting a total of 91 firearms, Gatpandan said the event was successful.

“Gun Buy-Backs are important in the City’s ongoing efforts to keep San Francisco and District 5 safe from gun violence. The amount of lethal fire power removed from our communities through gun buy-backs can have a significant impact on the quality of life for our residents,” said Supervisor Board President London Breed. “One gun off the streets could mean one life saved.”

“Gun violence has adversely affected our community all too often and our hope is that even one gun removed from our streets and our homes may help save a life. This gun buy-back is one step in our journey to help save lives and keep our community safe from gun violence,” said Captain Greg McEachern of Northern Police Station.

During this drive-through, drop-off event, guns in working condition were exchanged for up to $100 cash, with up to $200 cash being offered for assault weapons.
