SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco officials want a lawsuit dismissed by the parents of Kate Steinle, the woman who was shot to death along a San Francisco pier last year.

Police said the shooter was an illegal immigrant who had recently been released from city custody. The city argues it had no duty to notify federal immigration officials of the man’s release under the Sanctuary City ordinance.

The city insists it bears no responsibility for the woman’s death.

Kate Steinle’s parents argue the gunman would have been kept in custody and deported if the city and federal officials had done their jobs.

Steinle was shot to death in July 2015, as she walked with her father along Pier 14 in San Francisco.
