SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The 25,000 lights on the San Francisco Bay Bridge will shine again.

Caltrans said Tuesday the Bay Lights installation by artist Leo Villareal will permanently illuminate the western span of the bridge starting on January 30, when a re-lighting ceremony will be held just in time for the Super Bowl.

Caltrans said the project is coming back to life thanks to a partnership between Caltrans, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Illuminate the Arts.

Villareal created the 500-foot-high art installation, which was conceived as a two-year installation that ended on March 2015.

Caltrans offered to maintain the lights on a permanent basis if Illuminate the Arts could raise $4 million for the materials and installation costs. The group was able to raise the funds.
