A man in San Bruno called the police on Thursday after finding a duffel bag filled with guns and ammunition in his home; he says he has no idea how it all got there.
A stash of guns and ammunition capable of inflicting a lot of damage if placed in the wrong hands was found in a home on San Marco Avenue in San Bruno.
“There were three pistols or handguns located within the duffel bag and then a rifle as well, a .22-Caliber rifle, in addition to six boxes of ammunition,” Lt. Ryan Johansen said.
Neighbors say the duffel bag was found on this property.
Police say the man who reported the guns and ammo just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday lives there.
He claims the bag and its contents don’t belong to him and doesn’t know how or when they got here.
“At this point in time, the guns are not, by our best estimation, are not inherently illegal, meaning the way they’re designed or built, or just the type of guns they are,” Lt. Johansen said. “Whether or not they’re properly registered, whether or not they’ve been used in a crime–all of these are things we’ll be looking into as part of the ongoing investigation.”
Lt. Johansen says the man who reported the bag did the right thing by leaving it in the home and calling the police to check it out rather than bringing it to the police station.
“Our recommendation would always be to call and let the police department come out to the scene for these types of things, as opposed to handling it yourself,” Johansen said. “You never know the status of the guns and what might happen if you move them.”
Fortunately, police say the duffel bag did not include any explosive devices.
