(BCN) – A 46-year-old Salinas man was sentenced to nine years in state prison for injuring his elderly father in 2014, the Monterey County District
Attorney’s office announced Friday.
After a three-day trial, Steve Ferguson was found guilty and convicted in January of elder abuse, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon and, according to prosecutors.
On Nov. 17, 2014, Ferguson made various threats to his then 69-year-old father. The two were living together at the time.
Over a period of time, several altercations between the two men occurred, including one where Ferguson held a knife to his father’s throat and another in which he held a fireplace poker to his father’s chest, prosecutors said.
In a separate incident, Ferguson struck his father in the head with a hatchet because his father refused to fight him, injuring the elderly man. Ferguson later disposed of the hatchet as he ran from the house.
The victim received nine staples to his head as a result of the attack, according to prosecutors.
