Salinas home burglary suspect who died in struggle with victim identified

SALINAS (BCN) — A burglary suspect who died during a struggle with a victim Thursday in Salinas was identified Monday as 20-year-old Antonio Ramirez, police said.

Ramirez, a Salinas resident, and another suspect had fought with a 45-year-old man at a home in the 1900 block of Cabernet Way, south of East Boronda Road, according to police.

The 45-year-old man and his three children came back to their home around 7 p.m. and were faced with the suspects, who were in the process of burglarizing the home, police said.

The suspects attacked the father and the fight spilled outside the front door, according to police.

Ramirez continued to struggle with the 45-year-old man while the other suspect ran away to a small car parked near the residence, police said.

When Ramirez went limp the victim was able to call 911, according to police.

Responding officers gave Ramirez CPR and an ambulance transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

An autopsy showed Ramirez died as a result of the fight with the homeowner, who hasn’t been arrested in connection with the death, according to police.
