ROHNERT PARK (KRON) — Police are warning car owners about a series of catalytic converter thefts in Rohnert Park.
Police say Ford and Chevrolet utility trucks are the main targets.
The car part is often stolen for its rare metals that can be sold for upwards of $800 an ounce.
So, police are advising you to park in well-lit areas.
And they even suggest engraving your VIN Number on the your catalytic converter that could help identify it if recovered.

Rohnert Park has experienced recent thefts of catalytic converters. This trend is not limited to Rohnert Park and multiple thefts have been reported in surrounding areas plus Merced, Auburn, Hanford, Clearlake, and Santa Cruz. Ford and Chevrolet Utility trucks have been the primary targets. We want to alert you to this growing trend and ask that you take additional safety measures. Always park in well-lit areas and if you have security cameras, make sure the vehicle(s) are within the camera coverage area. Consider adding a security device to the converter, weld the converter to the vehicle to make it harder to remove, and engrave the vehicle VIN on the converter to help identify if recovered.
Rohnert Park has also experienced several tool related burglaries. Tools have been taken from vehicles and structures. If possible, remove tools from your vehicles when parked at night or for extended periods of time. Consider engraving your name or business name onto your tools. If you give or receive tools during this holiday season, please place the cardboard boxes and packaging out for trash collection the morning of collection or dispose yourself at another location.
