Robbers smash-and-grab as bus full of police drive by

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A couple of robbers had some bad timing during Sunday’s Bay to Breakers when a van full of 244th Recruit Class and their Police Academy Training Staff drove by in the middle of his smash-and-grab.

According to SFPD, the Officers and Recruits were on a charted SF Muni bus when members of the recruit class saw a suspect inside a retail store on the 800 block of Market Street.

The recruits saw the suspect smash a display case and begin taking things as the bus drove by.  The police stopped the bus, disembarked, and immediately arrested the man.

Officers arrested 37-year-old Cory Lawler of Fremont as he exited the store with a roller bag containing stolen merchandise.

Additional Officers detained a man who was walking away from the scene after he dropped a jacket containing items stolen from the store.

According to police, 55-year-old Dale Brackner of Brisbane and Lawler were both booked on burglary and possession of stolen property charges at the San Francisco County Jail.

“This arrest provided the recruits, who are in their 19 th week of a 32 week course, an opportunity put their training into action and see first-hand how an arrest and investigation unfolds, sometimes in just a matter of seconds,” said Captain Greg Yee, Commanding Officer of the Police Academy.
