Private employers added 214,000 jobs in February, above economists’ expectations, suggesting solid job growth despite market turmoil and worries about a slowing global economy. It’s still a very strong report. The jobs market is very healthy.

A trifecta of grim news for the nation especially, women. Regardless of which state you call home, if you’re a woman, your chances of living in poverty when you pass 65 are alarmingly high. In another report, this one a survey, reveals that, man or woman, East Coast or West Coast, it just doesn’t matter: Most Americans are nervous about what quality of life they’ll have in retirement.

In the days after the attacks of Sept. 11, law enforcement and national security agencies brought Congress a lengthy list of new surveillance powers they wanted. Most ended up quickly becoming law as part of the Patriot Act. But a request to ban strong computer codes, or encryption technology, was left out completely.
