SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A new report on car burglaries in San Francisco is out, and it indicates a problem that is now considered an epidemic.

Recommendations have been released by the San Francisco Civil Grand Jury aimed at helping to curb the problem, along with some shocking numbers on just how bad the problem has become.

The report said that career criminals are considered the driving force behind most of the crimes.

Auto burglary-related crime was reported nearly 25,000 times in San Francisco in 2015 and resulted in more than $19 million in property theft, according to the report.

The civil grand jury said there should be a public safety strategy, including using resources to deal with criminal gangs that operate across districts. They also said there should be analysts to study crime patterns to both help police and identify future crime trends.

And the city should also use social media and technology to do a better job of informing the public, the report said.
