WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A Kansas woman claims someone sent her a racist letter in the mail, telling her that black people were not welcome in her neighborhood.
“I hope this never happens to anyone else,” said Nancy Wirths.
Nancy Wirths said she is still shaken up and somewhat frightened by the anonymous letter that she received on Monday.
“I look over my shoulder. I watch. The kids aren’t allowed to be outside,” she said.
Wirths said the hand-written note that was addressed to “resident” was an attack on her and her biracial family. Wirths has nine grandchildren. Six of them are African-American.
“It doesn’t make it who they are,” Wirths said.
The letter that Wirths said she received said in part:
“We have noticed there are some black children at your residence. Maybe you are running a daycare or these are your children. In either case, we have put our house for sale. This neighborhood does not need any blacks in it.”
The letter then goes on to say that there is a reason for the saying ‘the other side of the tracks’ and that is where these people belong.
Wirths said she is dumbfounded by the situation. She said, as an adult, she can handle it, but her grandchildren should not have to deal with this type of hate.
“These are kids under the age of ten where me and their parents are trying to raise them, you have to love everybody, be friends with everybody. It doesn’t matter if they’re brown, purple,” she said. “It’s just a shame that they have taken the innocence away from the children.”
Wichita police are investigating the letter. They said the person behind the note could face a disorderly conduct charge.
