A race car driver who died after hitting a wall at 100-plus miles an hour at Sonoma Raceway Wednesday has been identified as 75-year-old James Kenneth Rambo, of Napa.
Rambo was racing his 1976 Ford Pinto in the Wednesday Night Drags program on the raceway’s quarter-mile strip.
At the conclusion of the drag race, after he crossed the finish line, it appears he braked but his vehicle pulled to the left and he hit a k-rail at over 100 mph.
Lifesaving efforts were provided by an ambulance crew but Rambo died as a result of his injuries.
The accident happened at around 6:15 p.m.Rambo’s family has been notified.
He was the only race on the track at the time.
This is the first on-track death in the 30-year history of the Wednesday Night Drags program.
