A proposed coffee shop opening up in San Mateo would have their baristas serving in bikinis, and this has some members of the community concerned.
Also, the risque attire might not meet the zoning codes.
Just south of Redwood City, on the corner of El Camino Real and Dumbarton Avenue in an unincorporated area of San Mateo County, there sits a small drive-thru coffee shop called Caffino that recently closed.
A new owner, Pink Pantherz Espresso, is trying open a similar business, a drive-thru coffee shop, but with a twist.
The baristas at the Pink Pantherz Espresso coffee shops are known for wearing very revealing bikinis. They are bikini baristas.
“I can understand neighbors being concerned,” Fifth District San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa said.
Canepa says the city has taken quite a few concerns from community members. There are schools nearby and kids will be walking by the business.
“We have heard from the community,” Canepa said. “They have spoken up against this”
Some neighbors aren’t concerned.
“Coffee is coffee,” resident Tricia Young said. “I don’t care, as long as not naked.”
Young has been coming to this drive-thru coffee shop for years and says she will continue even if the baristas are in bikinis.
“If I had a better body, maybe I would work there,” Young said.
A spokesperson for San Mateo County told KRON4 the Pink Panterz business application is under review, and they are working with the owner to make sure the business is in compliance with current zoning codes.
Depending on how revealing the bikinis are, it might. But the business is in a classification of an adult business and no adult businesses are allowed to exist where the Pink Pantherz Espresso currently is set to open.
The owners of Pink Pantherz Espresso coffee shops could not be reached for comment.
