WATSONVILLE (KRON) — A bicyclist was hit and killed by a potentially impaired driver Sunday night in Watsonville, according to California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened on Freedom Boulevard near Scurich Lane around 8:40 p.m, CHP officials said.
Violeta Cervantes was driving a 2007 Chrysler when she hit the 34-year-old bicyclist, who is a Scotts Valley resident.
Police are not yet releasing his name.
Cervantes told investigators that she was distracted by her phone prior to hitting the bicyclist, CHP officials said.
The front of her car hit the back end of the bike. She then fled the scene, but CHP officers were able to find the Chrysler driving west on Freedom Boulevard.
CHP officials said drugs and/or alcohol may have been a factor in the collision, which remains under investigation.
