Portable meth lab found behind shuttered Burger King

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A portable meth lab was found by a police officer behind a closed Burger King restaurant in San Marcos.

An officer was responding to a suspicious person call around 2 p.m. Sunday at 1011 N. Interstate 35, at the corner of East Hopkins Street, when he found a backpack with several containers inside.

An acidic powder in one of the containers made contact with the officer’s skin, giving him a small burn. The officer was treated and released by medics, the city of San Marcos said.

Responding detectives recognized the items in the bag as the makings of a meth lab. Officers called the San Marcos Fire Department Hazmat Unit, the Fire Marshal’s Office and the Hays County Narcotics Task Force to dismantle the lab.

A third-party hazmat company finished disposing of the substances and the area was cleared at 10 p.m.

No arrests have been made or suspects identified related to the case.
