SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Many political leaders in the U.S. are paying their respects to Elie Wiesel who passed away today.

The 87-year-old Holocaust survivor, human rights activist, author and Noble Peace Prize winner has inspired many political figures.

President Obama shared his thought on Wiesel in a tweet.

Elie Wiesel was a great moral voice of our time and a conscience for our world. He was also a dear friend. We will miss him deeply.

The death of Wiesel did not only affect President Obama, but it also caught the attention of Former President Bill Clinton and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hilary Clinton. Together they issued a heart-felt statement.

The death even hit a local political figure from the Bay Area, Gavin Newsom.

Newsom payed his respects and tweeted about the author as well.

Elie Wiesel is proof that you don’t need formal authority to change the world, all you need is the moral authority.
