A man with a knife tried to strangle a pit bull puppy in Oakland on Saturday, police said.

The crime happened in the 200 block of Grand Avenue at around 2 p.m., according to police.

At the scene, police say the man also threatened to kill an adult pit bull.

Officers were able to get the man to drop the knife and surrender to police, authorities said. Officers took him into custody.

The pit bulls were taken to an animal shelter and did not have any injuries, police said.

Investigators believe the case may be connected to three puppies found mutilated and abandoned last week in Oakland.
