Police in San Mateo are asking for help identifying a man who threatened to shoot up a school while trying to buy a gun at Big 5 Sporting Goods.

Last Friday, a customer at the store located at 2825 S. El Camino Real called dispatch to report a threat.

Police say the customer reported hearing a man tell an employee that he wanted to purchase a firearm.

The man then threatened to shoot up a school and asked the employee for a good shirt to wear, according to police.

Officers arrived at the store within minutes and searched for the man, but he was not located.

The witnesses didn’t find the man’s statements to be credible, but in an abundance of caution, police are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the man who made the statements.

The man is described as a white male adult, about 35 years old, appears transient, last seen wearing a camo sweatshirt and blue jeans.

If anyone has information regarding this incident or identity of the suspect please call SMPD, 911.
