SALINAS (KRON) — Police in Salinas are investigating the city’s ninth homicide of the month of August Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to the 100 block of Soledad Street just before 1 a.m. on reports of a person having been shot.

Initially, officers could not locate a body, however after a search of the area they found a victim in the parking lot of 1 Bridge Street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim, a 20-year-old transient, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said it was unknown why he was in the area where the shooting occurred, or why he was targeted. His identification has not yet been released.

An investigation revealed that the shooting may have occurred several minutes before initial calls to dispatch.

The delay in contacting the police resulted in the area being deserted when officers arrived and no witnesses, or suspects could be located.

This is the 27th homicide of the year in Salinas, and the ninth in the month of August.

Police said anyone who may have information on this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Derek Gibson (831) 758-7442 or Detective Jared Sivertson at (831) 758-7132.Bay City News contributed to this report
