FREMONT (BCN) — Police in Fremont are investigating several recent reports of residents receiving calls from Internal Revenue Service impersonators.
The Police Department’s dispatch center received several complaints about IRS impersonators on Tuesday.
Police said the callers are posing as IRS workers, and in many cases, the caller ID indicates the call is coming from the IRS.
The scam consists of a person calling victims and saying they owe money to the IRS. The caller then demands the money be paid via a pre-paid debit card, and if the victim refuses, the caller threatens to call the police to have the victim arrested, police said.
Police do not know if the scammers are working in the Fremont area.
Police said the IRS usually only contacts individuals via mail and not by phone. Residents who receive calls from the scammers should hang up and not agree to pay money over the phone.
