What began as a police chase in the City of San Pablo early Tuesday morning ended in a fatal crash causing all lanes to close in both directions on San Pablo Avenue.

The suspect in the crash has been identified as 29-year-old Narayan Sanwal of El Sobrante, police said.

Officials say the pursuit happened just after midnight after a Deputy Sheriff initiated a traffic stop.

The gold-colored Lexus ran a red-light driving about 50 miles-per-hour, authorities say.

The car did not stop which led to the pursuit reaching above 100 miles-per-hour.

The deputy says the pursuit was then canceled because of the high speeds and proceeded to turn off his patrol lights and sirens.

Police say they lost sight of the car just before coming across the car flipped upside down.

Authorities say the driver apparently rolled multiple times before landing on the roof.

Deputies attempted first-aid on the unresponsive driver but was later pronounced dead.

Roads were shut down between Road 20 and El Portal, near College Center.

Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department says the area around San Pablo Dam Road and Mifflin Avenue was also closed to investigate the crash.

Investigators remained on scene after the crash ended early in the morning, and the investigation continues.
