FAIRFIELD (KRON) — Fairfield police have arrested a man accused of striking a child in a hit-and-run Monday afternoon, police said.

Police said they arrested a 19-year-old man for injuring the 5-year-old child. The child sustained major injuries when he was hit by a brown or gold four-door sedan at around 4:45 p.m. on Monday.

The incident happened in the middle of San Marco Street, police said.

The driver fled west on San Marco Street and then south on Kidder Avenue, police said.

Police found a similar vehicle that was recorded on a surveillance camera in the area. Officers searched the area and found the suspected hit-and-run vehicle parked in an alley in the 700 block of Delaware Street.

Police arrested Jefferson Tara, 19, of Fairfield, around 9 a.m. Tuesday on suspicion of hit-and-run causing injury.

The child who was struck remains in stable condition at a hospital and is expected to survive, police said.Bay City News contributed to this report.
