SAN MATEO (KRON) — The San Mateo police department is looking for a mountain lion.
Police received a report of a mountain lion sighting around 8 p.m. in the area of 20th Avenue and La Salle Drive. Police confirmed it was a mountain lion through a photo that a resident took.
Upon arrival police set up a perimeter to capture the animal, and residents were asked to stay in doors during the search.
The police along with representatives from the Department of Fish and Wildlife searched the area for one hour before closing the perimeter. Police were unable to locate the mountain lion.
According to police, they are planning the search the area and other areas nearby frequently.
Here are some simple tips if you encounter a mountain lion.
- If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.
- Avoid hiking or jogging through wooded areas when mountain lions are most active-dawn, dusk, or at night. •Keep a close watch on small children when hiking or traveling in or about wooded areas.
- If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
