An Australia-bound plane leaving San Francisco had to turn around and make an emergency landing at San Francisco International Airport early Friday morning.
United flight 863 departed at 11:15 p.m. from SFO headed to Sydney, Australia.
The plane took of out over the Pacific Ccean and experienced a mechanical issue with the left engine.
The plane made several circles over the ocean before an Alert 2* was called at 12:29 a.m.
By 12:34 a.m. the plane had landed and taxied under its own power to the gate.
Passengers exited through the normal gate and no injuries were reported.

*An Alert 2 will be issued by Airport Communications when a pilot indicates a more significant malfunction with his or her aircraft that may affect the operation or control of the aircraft. SFFD-Airport Division fire and rescue units and SFO’s Airfield Safety Officers assume a standby position at predetermined positions near the arrival runway. Once the aircraft has safely landed, responding units will follow the aircraft to the gate. Depending on nature of the emergency declared by the pilot, the Incident Commander (senior fire officer) may elect to request mutual aid from fire units located within the City, or from neighboring communities, or both.
