(KRON) — A Hawaiian man said his Samsung cellphone overheated and melted while he was at dinner.

The victim of the melting phone blames an extended battery that he bought online.

“I reached for my backpack, pulled out my phone, kind of fumbled it, and it fell on the floor,” Lester Salazar said.

The online manufacturer, Hyperion, claims its batteries come with a microchip that prevents its devices from overheating.

“I think when he dropped the battery, it damaged the membrane in the battery, caused a short circuit, and the battery ignited,” battery expert Bill Ogawa said.

Samsung cellphones have had a recent history of overheating.

“The whole back of the phone was melted off,” Salazar said.

Samsung officials said protecting your battery with a sturdy case will prevent a rare meltdown

“I’m not going to get an extended battery anytime soon,” Salazar said.

Salazar said the battery’s maker, Hyperion, refunded his money under a two-year warranty.CNN contributed to this report
