UPDATE: A gas leak Thursday afternoon in Campbell has been capped and much of the traffic has returned to normal, police and Santa Clara County Fire Department officials said.

The leak was capped at 3:17 p.m. at 1311 Camden Ave., near White Oaks Road and state Highway 17.

Southbound San Tomas Expressway, which becomes Camden Avenue just east of Highway 17, and eastbound Camden Avenue have reopened, police Capt. Joe Cefalu said. But only one lane of westbound Camden Avenue will be open as crews restore the area where the leak occurred.

PG&E crews hope to have repairs complete by 10 p.m. Two customers were still without service at 4:48 p.m., PG&E spokeswoman Mayra Tostado said.

The shelter-in-place order for the Camden Convalescent Hospital at 1331 Camden Ave and the evacuation orders issued for a nearby Shell gas station and a Foster Freeze fast food restaurant have been lifted, Cefalu said.

Santa Clara County Fire Department officials originally reported the line was 10 inches in size.

Utility officials are investigating why the construction crew hit the gas line since it was marked, Tostado said.

No one was injured as a result of the leak. PG&E officials want to remind people to call 811 to have lines marked before digging.

CAMPBELL (KRON) — A shelter-in-place is in effect on Thursday afternoon as PG&E and fire crews are responding to a gas leak in Campbell, officials said.

The leak was first reported at 12:51 p.m. at 1311 Camden Avenue and White Oaks Road, near state Highway 17.

A third-party contractor hit a 2-inch gas line, Campbell police Capt. Joe Cefalu and Santa Clara County Fire Department spokeswoman Stephanie Stuehler said.

Campbell police evacuated a Foster Freeze and Shell Gas Station.

County fire officials called for additional resources because the leak is near a busy intersection and they want to make sure people are safe.

Crews are working to shut off the gas leak.
