PETALUMA (KRON)–An 11-month baby, who was accidentally shot by her father in Petaluma Saturday night, is expected to recover, according to police.

The baby is recuperating at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland.

The girl’s father was removing a gun from a bedside table before going out with the mother, said Sgt. Ed Crosby.

The girl was next to her mother on the bed when the gun went off.

The .45-caliber gun shot hit the back of the baby’s shoulder, Crosby said.

The bullet then went through the baby’s chest then through the matress and into a closet, Crosby said.

“It was pretty miraculous,” Crosby said. “A slight difference in trajectory and it would have been a different matter.”

The shooting is still under investigation.

The police report will be sent to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed.
