SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – San Francisco’s top prosecutor says he is expanding the taskforce assigned to investigate misconduct by 14 city police officers linked to racist and homophobic text messages.

District Attorney George Gascon announced Thursday the taskforce will include three retired judges who will review 3,000 arrests involving the officers to determine if bias led to wrongful prosecutions.

Gascon says the judges will also evaluate whether there is a deeper culture of bias at the police department.

He says the three judges, Justice Cruz Reynoso, Judge Ladoris Cordell, and Judge Dickran Tevrizian, have experience in civil rights and criminal justice reform.

Gascon says that to insure their independence the judges are from outside San Francisco and will not be paid. They are expected to complete their investigation by the end of the year.
