Hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside San Francisco’s Israeli Consulate on Tuesday to protest U.S. support for Israel, the moving of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem — which Israel views as its capitol — and the violence and death that resulted from that.
“The only ones who don’t want peace are Israel, and they continue to take Palestinian land and we have continued to come out here to protest more of those land grabs and the Trump administration actually moving the Embassy adds insult to injury, especially when they are talking of peace,” said Sharif Zakout with the Arab Resource and Organizing Center.
Among the protesters were American Jews who wanted to be clear they too don’t support what happened Monday.
“I’m really angry that my taxes are being used to fund this horrible oppression of Palestinians by Israel,” said Carole Seligman, who was protesting against Israel.
The Consulate closed early due to the protest, but a smaller group of counter-demonstrators waving the Israeli flag gathered across the street.
“I support the Embassy moving to Jerusalem, and I think one death is too many on any side,” said Suzy Sholin, who supports Israel.
Though on opposite sides of the street, police provided protective barriers for both sides.
Eventually, pro-Palestinian demonstrators took to the streets.
Escorted by police, they marched from Montgomery Street to Market, to 7th and Mission, where they rallied outside the San Francisco Federal Building.
A consulate leader has a different outlook on the situation.
KRON4 spoke exclusively with the Deputy Consul General who says Israel is not interested in anyone getting hurt but the country needs to defend itself.
The Deputy Consul General says this is not changing realities on the ground but will give Israel a fair chance.
