SALINAS (BCN) — Two people were arrested Saturday in Salinas on suspicion of possessing stolen property, conspiracy and for drug offenses after a search began for a suspect a package theft, police said.

Jennifer Padgett, 38, and Billy Davis, 27, were arrested at 4:13 p.m. at a gas station on John Street.

Padgett was caught on surveillance video taking a package Friday off the front stoop of a home in the 600 block of West Acacia Street, according to police.

Padgett was also identified as a suspect in a theft on Easter on Cedros Avenue.

A police officer on Saturday spotted a truck matching the description of the one used in the package theft and stopped to talk with the driver and passenger, police said.

The officer found that Padgett was the driver and matched the description of the package thief.

She wore the same clothes as the person seen in the surveillance video, according to police.

The officer searched the truck and found heroin, a small amount of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and property from the West Acacia Street home.

While the officer was searching the truck and talking with the suspects, a victim of the Cedros Avenue theft stopped and identified Padgett as the suspect in their loss, police said.

Padgett and Davis were booked into the county jail.
