OUSD to vote Monday to close East Oakland school

The Oakland Unified School District is facing a $30 million deficit and could close as many as 24 schools in the next few years.

On Monday the school board will make a final decision on shutting down Roots International Academy located in East Oakland.

Those trying to save the school protested the closing at a school board meeting last week.

If the school closes in June, 150 current sixth and seventh-grade students to attend another school next year.

The district says it will work with families to place kids in the right school.

Board members will meet again Monday night at 6 p.m. to vote on whether Roots will stay open.
