Only on 4: Family friend of suspect accused of killing Hayward police sergeant speaks out

OAKLAND (KRON) —  Marcos Estrada faced a judge and courtroom full of police Friday afternoon.

He is charged with the murder of Hayward police Sgt. Scott Lunger. Police said they have taken his car into evidence, riddled with bullets and blood. Court documents said Estrada showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his side hours after a police sergeant went down during a traffic stop in Hayward. But despite the evidence, Estrada’s mother says there’s more to the story.

And on Friday, KRON 4’s Kate Cagle talked to a family friend and minister, who says Estrada has to be innocent. When you talk to people who know Marcos Estrada, there is a word that keeps coming up–incapable.

They are shocked that the 21-year-old man with no criminal history is accused of killing a cop.

“From the person I’ve known for over 10 years, he’s not capable of something like that,” Estrada’s friend Bobby Rivera said.

Rivera has known accused killer Estrada since he was a boy.  They are close family friends. And on Friday, he was distraught to see Marcos’s mug shot. The 21-year-old now facing murder charges.
