One dead in Bodega Bay kayaking accident

MARIN (KRON) — One person is dead and another has been hospitalized after their kayaks crashed into rocks near Dillon Beach in Bodega Bay on Wednesday afternoon.

The Marin County Sheriff’s office said that they received multiple calls at about 4:35 p.m. reporting that two kayakers were in distress.’


Crews located one of the kayakers. That person was showing signs of hypothermia, but was treated and released. A social media post from the Marin County Sheriff’s office described one of the kayakers as being severely injured.

The body of the second kayaker, a 50-year-old male, was spotted in the water. Crews were able to recover the body and bring to shore.

The survivor told authorities said that the two men launched from Nick’s Cove just south of Dillon Beach when he noticed his friend had fallen into the water. He also fell into the water after attempting to pull the other man out of the water.

Nearby fishermen witnessed the incident and called authorities.

Both men were wearing life jackets when they launched, however, the deceased was found without his life jacket.

Officials are waiting to notify the victim’s next of kin before releasing his identity.

Last month, rescue crews used the help of the CHP helicopter to locate a 24-year-old hiker that fell about 30 feet down a cliff along the Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County. The hiker was found and pulled to safety.
