SAN MATEO (KRON)—One person died and three others are in the hospital after a car crashed into a tree Sunday morning after a car crashed into a tree on Highway 101 in San Mateo, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers responded to reports of a crash around 2:10 a.m. on the Third Avenue off-ramp, CHP officials said.
When they arrived on scene, officers found a BMW coupe traveling northbound tried to leave the highway. When the driver reached the Third Avenue off-ramp, he somehow lost control of the car and crashed into the tree, CHP said.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The three passengers inside the car were all San Mateo residents. They were all taken to a local hospital.
A 21-year-old passenger and a 22-year-old passenger had minor injuries. The third passenger, a 21-year-old, had major injuries.
Investigators believe the passengers and the driver were drinking alcohol, CHP said.
The Third Street off-ramp was closed for two hours as they investigated the crash. The off-ramp has been reopened.
