Olympic gold medalist from Santa Rosa presented with Key to the City

SANTA ROSA (BCN) — An Olympian from Santa Rosa received the Key to the City from the mayor last week, according to city officials.

Maya DiRado competed as a swimmer in this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, winning four medals. She won gold medals in the 200-meter backstroke and 4×200-meter relay, silver in the 400-meter individual medley and bronze in the 200-meter individual medley.

Last Thursday, Mayor John Sawyer presented the key to DiRado as well as a certificate of achievement in honor of her accomplishments in swimming in Brazil.

Sawyer said in a statement, “It’s been 12 years since a Key to the City has been presented to anyone, and I was extremely happy to have been able to present on to Ms. DiRado.”

City officials said DiRado, who graduated in 2010 from Maria Carrillo High School, spent the day with former teachers and the students at her alma mater along with the mayor.
