OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – A federal judge in Oklahoma has sentenced a former missionary to 40 years in prison for sexually abusing children at an orphanage in Kenya.
Matthew Lane Durham showed no emotion when he was sentenced Monday morning. The 21-year-old Edmond man had faced up to 30 years in prison on each of four counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places.
U.S. District Judge David L. Russell called the crimes heinous and ordered Durham to pay restitution of $15,863.
Prosecutors alleged Durham targeted orphans while volunteering at the Upendo Children’s Home in Nairobi between April and June 2014.
A jury convicted him in June on seven counts of abuse, but Russell acquitted Durham of three of the counts in January.
