Sonoma Sheriff’s Office reported that Highway 37 at Skaggs Island Road was closed on Wednesday afternoon due to police activity. 

Officials say that the highway was shut down in both directions.

On Wednesday afternoon, the American Canyon Police Department was chasing a wanted felony suspect.

The department reached out to the Sheriff’s office and California Highway Patrol for assistance on Highway 37 towards Sonoma County from the Vallejo area.

Officials say that the suspect crashed his car and then proceeded to run through the marshlands near Skaggs Island Road. 

According to authorities, the suspect went into the muddy water and told officers to kill him.

Officers say they ‘attempted to negotiate with the suspect, who was agitated and belligerent.’

“The suspect was soaking wet and cold, and then realized he was stuck in the mud. The realization that he was more stuck than stand-off promptly changed his tune and the suspect now wanted help getting out.”

The CHP Air Unit used a helicopter to pull the suspect out of the water.

Following the rescue, officials say that they were waiting to arrest him.

Authorities have announced that HWY 37 has reopened following the situation.
