VALLEJO (KRON) — The Richmond Police Department is mourning fallen officer Agustine Vegas who was murdered in his Vallejo home early Thursday morning.

Police say that the 58-year-old officer was shot multiple times in his home on Narragansett Court during a domestic dispute involving one of his adult children and the gunman.

Vegas, a 15-year-veteran of the Richmond Police Department, lived in Vallejo and was off-duty at the time of the shooting.

Officers at the scene tell KRON 4 that he was beloved by his fellow officers and that they are devastated. They praised him for his active work in the community.

A PROTECTOR, A PEACEMAKER

A family friend told KRON that Vegas and his wife Sandra ran a fostering program for children from their home in the Glen Cove subdivision of Vallejo.

“They have ten kids,” said Renee McCrary. “Their kids are always around them, they are a very, very close loving family.”

“It’s horrific, they have a beautiful family, they’re just beautiful people,” she said.

Richmond police Capt. Mark Gagan said he was with Vegas Wednesday night only hours before he was killed. Gagan remembered Vegas’ compassion for others and said while he doesn’t have all the details of the early morning shooting, he sensed Vegas as a “protector and a peacemaker.”

Gagan said he’ll miss the officer’s vibrant presence around the police department.

“It was his facial expressions when he was at work, it was uplifting,” said Gagan.
