Off-duty Redding CHP officer fatally shoots suspected intruder

REDDING, Calif. (AP) – Police say an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer fatally shot a suspected intruder at his Redding home.

The Redding Police Department says officers first went to a home Sunday after receiving a call about a prowler trying break into it through the back door. The officers didn’t find the suspect.

The Sacramento Bee reports that while the officers were still in the area, a call was made from a nearby home owned by a CHP officer, reporting the shooting of an unidentified person trying to break into the house.

The suspect was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Redding police say the identity of the suspect will be released after his family is notified. The identity of the off-duty officer will not be released at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
